Sunday 13th November 2011, at Poynton Community Centre
with guest tutors Emma Reid and John Dipper.
Welcome to the page for Poynton Fiddle Day! I've wanted to set up an event like this for some time, and I'm delighted to announce an afternoon of fiddle workshops, and an evening concert.
The workshops are suited to any fiddle player of any age from a basic to an advanced level. There will be two sets of hour and a half long hands-on fiddle workshops. We'll have two groups, one advanced and one of improvers. The tutors will swap over after the first session so everyone gets equal time with the two tutors. You do not need to be able to read music to participate!
There will also be a chance to talk fiddles with renowned maker Colin Cross, who will be running a Fiddle Doctor stall, doing repairs spares and sales! Visit his website here.

Emma Reid is one of Sweden’s busiest musicians. She grew up in the north-east of England and started playing the fiddle at the age of three with her Swedish mother. Emma has graduated from Newcastle University and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, and became National Fiddler in 2006. Emma has a deeply personal style and a real ability to speak through her fiddle. She tours and teaches throughout Scandinavia and Britain with amongst others Sofia Karlsson, Roger Tallroth (of Väsen), Daniel Reid and the English folk string quartet Methera. |

A respected and established performer and composer, John grew up steeped in the traditions of Southern England. His unique playing style, and his compositions convey a deep understanding and passion for indigenous culture. A tutor who is much in demand, John has taught at the Australian National Festival, Ashokan in the USA, Sidmouth, Whitby, Broadstairs and Towersey festivals, and has also taught on the World Irish Music course at Limerick University, the Folk Degree course at Newcastle University, and at the University of Quebec, Canada. John’s passion for vernacular music led to him to focus on the interpretation of field recordings, looking at intonation, tuning and expression. As well as performing with Methera, John also works with the English Acoustic Collective, Luke Daniels and Claudine Arcand, a leading fiddle player from Québec, creating new music that bridges the Atlantic and draws upon the rich traditions of both cultures. |
