Suileng Forestry Railway

24th September 2005

The Suileng forestry railway dieselised a few years ago, but retained a steam loco in case a bunch of nutcases like us turned up. We hired the steam loco and a train for a two day jaunt up the 130 km network. The network spans a huge area of northern China, funnelling huge numbers of logs into Suileng itself. Out of season, the line doesn't really do much at all besides the handful of railcars and the occasional sand or limestone train. As such, we had the line to ourselves for the 2 days. This photo is at the first reversing triangle, where the loco basically drives up into someone's garden at the top of the triangle.

The great thing about hiring a train like this, is that after our first attempt to take a sunset shot, we were able to send it back for another go! I was being attacked by giant mosquitos, which I had to evict very quietly so as not to spoil the video footage another tour member was taking.

On the second day here, the rice harvest was in full flow, as the tied off stacks of rice testify.
