3rd and 4th October 2005 The last mainline steam railway in the world. Only 10 weeks later, this line is entirely dieselised. These really were the last moments of big steam. In first light, a single headed QJ loco takes a freight out of Chabuga towards Lindong. |
Despite being freight locos, QJs performed excellently on the passenger service, easily racing up the grade at linespeed of 80kmph.
Double headed QJs allowed for huge freight trains like this example on the bridge West of Lindong.
At Gulamanhan, the station approach keeper stands to attention for a Westbound freight entering the loop.
First light sillhouettes a double headed freight train waiting for the line West to Lindong.
But the scrap lines at Daban shed are longer every day as new diesels are delivered. Every engine on this railway is now scrap bar the five locos temporarily in reserve at Daban. The contrast at Daban between this visit and my last could not have been greater. It was a sad way to leave China.
