| Baiyin is a real outpost of steam traction, with virtually the whole network being under steam power; the main line to the mountains being 100% steam hauled. Local rail workers, whilst being fairly evasive in their answers, suggested that steam might survive at least another three years here. This is the morning passenger to Kuangsan. |

| We needed permissions to visit this line, but once we'd got them, we found ourselves free to photograph anything we liked around the main yard and shed. I experimented with reflections with this stunning freshly overhauled SY. |

| Acid tanks leave the military factory. The network is joint owned by three companies,one of which manufactures gunpowder for the military. It's best not to try to get too close to their factory. |
