Steam in China

I made my second and third visits to the People's Republic of China in early Autumn 2005 and Spring 2006. Steam is fading fast, in this last great stronghold of steam traction, and many of the engines I saw in action have already been scrapped. I went at just the right time to see the final few weeks of steam on the Jitong railway, the last mainline steam railway in the world, and also had the opportunity to visit a number of narrow gauge railways and industrial installations.

I was also very fortunate to be in the safe hands of Bernd Seiler's FarRail Tours, who were thoroughly professional and great fun throughout.
